Most Talked About Phones at Mobile World Congress , |
Mobile World Congress has become the big phone and tablet event and this year there is no shortage of new product announcements coming out of Barcelona Spain. Android is one of the hot topics this year with reports on devices that are running the current version of Android (4.0) aka Ice Cream Sandwich and speculation on products that will run the next version (5.0) aka Jelly Bean. Other hot topics this year include 4G LTE, Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) and Quad-core processors like NVIDIA’s Tegra 3. But the big question is do any of the new batch of Android phones have what it takes to keep phone buyers from buying an iPhone? Here’s a rundown of some of the more talked about phones at MWC. |

HTC One Series – NVIDIA Inside But Only Outside the U.S.
HTC’s business problems notwithstanding, the HTC One Series made its debut at MWC. They phones range from small to large with the largest represented by the 4.7-inch One X. The power available under the hood of the One X is impressive. One of the One versions that won’t be available in the U.S. runs on a quad-core 1.5 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 and a 12-core NVIDIA GPU while the U.S. One version will run the speedy dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and will offer 4G LTE. The 4.7-inch, 720p display is housed in a polycarbonate body. The One V is in the middle of the series with a 4.3-inch display. The V is powered by the same Snapdragon processor as the U.S. version of the One X. The One V is the smaller, budget version with a 3.7-inch display and less powerful processor. All of the One series phones will run Android 4.0 (ICS) along with HTC’s Sense 4.0 custom UI. The One X will only be available through AT&T starting in April while the One V is being sold by T-Mobile |

LG’s Answer to HTC’s One X
The LG Optimus 4X HD offers a lot of phone in a small package. You get a 1.5 GHz Tegra 3 quad-core processor large 4.7-inch, 720p display with high pixel density IPS LCD display that has more pixels per inch than an iPhone Retina display. It will be running Android 4.0 (ICS) to boot. It’s thin and light despite a substantial 2150 mAh battery. |

Samsung Galaxy Beam
Among all the tablets and phones Samsung is showing off in Barcelona, the most novel one might be their new Galaxy Beam that includes a pico projector that can throw a 50-inch image on a screen or wall. The phone also includes a 4-inch display in case you’re not interested in sharing a presentation or watching a movie on a larger screen. |

Nokia Phone With 41
Mega-Pixels For Europe
Nokia has always prided themselves on delivering an impressive camera in their phones. The brand new Nokia 808 PureView camera announced at MWC offers a 41 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics. As impressive as that sounds it’s not all hardware-based mega-pixels but uses some oversampling and sub-pixel interpolation techniques to get the very large effective pixels. You’ll only get a single-core processor to help manage all those pixels and a 4-inch display to view them on but you can also shoot 1080p video using the phone’s continuous focus feature. The phone doesn’t run Android and is unlikely to be available in the U.S. but even as a camera phone you’ve got to admit it has some appeal. |

Sony Minus Ericsson
The first phone in the Sony Xperia NXT series was on display at CES this year. At MWC Sony showed off two more phones in the series the Xperia P and Xperia U. All three phones have a stylish aluminum case with the antennas housed in a plastic appendage at the bottom of the phone. Unfortunately Sony couldn’t make Android 4 available for them at launch but promises they will be upgradeable soon. The S model is the top of the line with a 4.3-inch display. The P model has a 4-inch display and the U model has a lower resolution 3.5-inch display. All three models have NFC for mobile payments and other contactless functions and there’s a big gaming aspect and Playstation connection with these phones. |

Huawei Claims to Have the Fastest Smartphone
Huawei is a major Chinese networking company that is making a play in the smartphone and tablet market. The Ascend D Quad runs Android 4.0 (ICS) and has a 4.5-inch 720p display offering an impressive 330 pixels per inch along with a 32 bit graphics processor which should result in a pretty good looking display. It’s powered by their own quad-core processor. They claim to be able to extend battery life using their own proprietary power management system. We haven’t seen any news on who will carry them or when they will be available. |
